“Worship as a Lifestyle”

Matthew 2:9-12

The Rt. Rev. Dr. Foley Beach January 5, 2014

Worship enables us to see the big picture. Worship takes us from our limited, narrow, and human perspective into the very throne-room of The Almighty, The Beloved, The Awesome One, and The God of Grace and Mercy.

Worship is Encountering God as God.

Martin Luther: To know God is to worship Him

A. Their Search for the Lord (v.9-10)

           Who were the Magi? ____________________

           How many were there? __________________

They were following signs in the sky _____________________

We must search and follow the signs given to us

“Seek the Lord while he wills to be found” (Is.55:6)

   1. The Revelation of ______________________

   2. The Revelation of ______________________

B. Their Reaction Upon Finding Him (v.11): ___________________________

Other Reactions in worship: Silence, Speechlessness, Jubilation, Falling down on one’s knees or face

Isaiah 6:5 - Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!

C. Their Offering (Sacrifice) (v.11)

Gold: for ________

Frankincense: for the _______

Myrhh – for his _______, mortality – used for burial

D. Their departure (v.12)

Having found the Messiah; Having worshipped Him; and Having given him their gifts, They leave and head back to their own country.

Let us evaluate our worship of God – not just on Sundays but during the rest of week as well.

E. Hebrews 13 speaks about worship…

v. 8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

v. 11 Speaks of the O.T. Sacrifice in worship

v. 12 Speaks of the Sacrifice of Jesus

v. 15 Speaks of believers offering a sacrifice to God – a sacrifice of praise

Hebrews 13:15 - Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name.

Why is this important? Worship helps us encounter God. Worship helps us keep our focus off ourselves. Worship helps us keep idols out of lives. Worship helps us see our sin. Worship helps us to enter the very Throne Room of God.
